The Indians “cut off . . 88 Whereas before violence impeached Englishness, it now preserves it, thanks to Underhill’s subtle but noteworthy transformation. The English community in America no longer represents the porous margins of the English body but has come to represent Englishness itself and its most rigorous defense. Although Underhill certainly imagines the monarch as its head, the English body so represented is no longer an aristocratic body. Rather, it is a body whose well-being depends on the strength of the common body and its integrity under that head.

By contrast, for the state to retain its authority in perpetuity some explanation would have to be offered for the transferal of the body politic from one natural body to another. The solution lay in the idea of a corporate body that could be distinguished from other natural bodies. Since succession was already determined by descent within the aristocracy, it was argued that the body politic was transferred through blood. The authority of the monarchy, like its perpetuity, thus depended on the careful monitoring of aristocratic blood or, in short, on its purity.

Such knowledge allows those like Smith to develop alliances that will serve England’s military and economic ends by displacing that other continental power, France, thus making Native Americans dependent on the English, all the while expanding potentially lucrative trading relationships in the area. It is the man of experience who can potentially turn adversarial peoples into dependent ones. Smith makes experience more essential to the success of the colonial project when he demonstrates that military as well as economic success depends on experiential knowledge.
