Sand is inexpensive, gives excellent drainage, and is the major component used by the most successful indigenous bulb growers in South Africa, but it makes the containers very heavy. In the past I have substituted perlite for some of the sand to reduce weight; its white granules give a good indication of how uni- Page 34 formly the medium's ingredients are mixed: if the perlite appears to have the same concentration throughout the medium, then presumably the other components do, too. Some growers believe that the perlite may be mildly toxic because of fluorides it contains and that the phytotoxicity is exacerbated if the medium is at all acid.
