Sand is inexpensive, gives excellent drainage, and is the major component used by the most successful indigenous bulb growers in South Africa, but it makes the containers very heavy. In the past I have substituted perlite for some of the sand to reduce weight; its white granules give a good indication of how uni- Page 34 formly the medium's ingredients are mixed: if the perlite appears to have the same concentration throughout the medium, then presumably the other components do, too. Some growers believe that the perlite may be mildly toxic because of fluorides it contains and that the phytotoxicity is exacerbated if the medium is at all acid.

He is unsurpassed in his dedication to preserve one of the most beautiful concentrations of wildflowers in the world, and he has created a true national treasure for South Africa. Among the many bulb genera being conserved at Glenlyon are Brunsvigia, Bulbinella, Gladiolus, Hesperantha, Lachenalia, Lapeirousia, Romulea, and Sparaxis. Community Wildflower Shows Among the delightful events of the spring season in the Cape are the wildflower shows held annually in several rural farming communities.
