The reason is that, although many offenses can move the ball effectively from 20-yard line to 20-yard line, they tend to be inconsistent and ineffectual when the field dimensions are shortened vertically in the so-called red zone. The fact is, in order for any offense to be successful, it must consistently put the ball in the end zone once it gets inside the 10-yard line.
