Page 35 Chapter 3 The Wing-Bone Power Attack If I had a win for every time a one-back type of offense got inside the 10-yard line and failed to put the ball in the end zone, I would be the winningest football coach of all time. The reason is that, although many offenses can move the ball effectively from 20-yard line to 20-yard line, they tend to be inconsistent and ineffectual when the field dimensions are shortened vertically in the so-called red zone. The fact is, in order for any offense to be successful, it must consistently put the ball in the end zone once it gets inside the 10-yard line.

These three principles describe the wing-bone offensive foundation; it is these three principles on which it is built. The beauty of the wing-bone is that it is an offense that players can both relate to enjoy running. Some coaches spend all their time attempting to learn the tricks of the trade, rather than simply learning the trade. Where football is concerned, time is a precious commodityand the wing-bone offense allows a coach the luxury of conserving his time. A coach who employs the wing-bone offense will therefore have more control over the element of time, as well as more time to repetitively drill his players.
