Their work, however, was not like the kind of work being done today by scholars more heavily influenced by the social sciences. The scholars of that generation were still operating out of a humanistic tradition in which criticism still aimed at clarifying a literary work that was prior and more important. Their criticismwas still aimed at explaining“what” a work means. Recent scholarship tends to focus more on “how” a text means, not what it means, and may decenter the literary work, no longer leaving it in a privileged position.
