Surnommé, il est l'auteur entre autres du Beau Danube bleu. He resigned as court conductor in 1870 to devote himself to the composition of operettas. Still, he was able to fashion attractive music in the Viennese waltz genre owing to his understanding of its nature -- indeed, he was central to its evolution in the nineteenth century. He would return to perform in Russia every year until 1865. [2] Later, in the 1870s, Strauss and his orchestra toured the United States, where he took part in the Boston Festival at the invitation of bandmaster Patrick Gilmore and was the lead conductor in a "Monster Concert" of over 1000 performers (see World's Peace Jubilee and International Musical Festival ), [13] performing his "Blue Danube" waltz, amongst other pieces, to great acclaim. [13] Strauss married the singer Henrietta Treffz in 1862, and they remained together until her death in 1878. [2] Six weeks after her death, [2] [14] Strauss married the actress Angelika Dittrich.

After studying music in secrecy, at the age of 19 he organized his own orchestra, a small group that performed his compositions in the restaurants of Hietzing.

Other compositions are in a more classical form, such as Minuets and other original compositions. At the end of 1703, 18-year-old Sebastian took up his post at the small town of Arnstadt, no doubt thrilled at having his own relatively large organ of two manuals and 23 speaking stops, and the responsibility of providing music for his own congregation. I have had to re-think Arcas' place in history based on this edition. I had never heard of this composer-guitarist, but I found upon sight reading the music, that it stood out as being of very high quality and fun to play. Andreas Stevens now owns 2 of Albert's former guitars and has recorded Albert's works. Monarchists who loved the emperor and Democrats, Republicans, and would-be reformers of all stripes, even the most virulent anti-Semites (a great irony, since the Strauss family was Jewish), all loved his music.

By 1817, Matiegka was established as a musician and guitar composer. Strauss was tempted (particularly by his first wife, the noted mezzo-soprano Jetty Treffz) to try his hand at operetta in the style of Offenbach and the Austrian composer Suppé. Notably, a 19th century source indicates Castellacci played in concert with Sor on at least one occasion. The waltz was just becoming popular in the early 19th century and Johann Strauss I wrote many delightful waltzes and other dance music for the court balls.
